Industry

Rich and various natural resources have served as a base for constructing on the region territory of a powerful and diversified industrial production. Huge metallurgical and mechanical engineering works, scientific-technical institutes, laboratories and pilot-design offices are concentrated here. The industrial potential of the region holds one of the leading places among all Russian regions.
 
Our region has an advanced industrial production, rich natural resources, powerful traffic streams and investment potential. Organizations of the Sverdlovsk region communicate with 128 countries around the world.
 
Large foreign companies confirm their interest in realization of many projects of Sverdlovsk region. Among the largest projects I would note the creation of a special economic area “Titanic Valley”, “Big Eurasian University”, construction of the largest international logistic complex and a new landing strip on the basis of “Koltsovo” airport; construction of power units on Beloyarskay nuclear power plant as well as projects in the sphere of commercial real estate and house-building. Participation of foreign countries will stimulate the development of innovational projects in various spheres of economy of the Sverdlovsk region.
 
Our region has favorable conditions for increasing the intermediate role in formation commodity, finance and investment flows for creation in its territory large center of business and financial services, forwarding operations, commercial transactions, fair and exhibition activity of Russian and international importance.
 

Metallurgy

Main metallurgical products are cast iron, steel, steel pipes, blister and refined copper, aluminum, titanium, nickel rolled ferrous and non-ferrous products, ferroalloys. The region produces 10,4% of all Russian ferrous metals rolled stock, 31,7% of steel pipes, 12,6% of iron ore, 14,3% of aluminum rolled stock, about 8,3% of primary aluminum, the main share of aluminum foil, 35,4% of refined copper, 11% of cast iron, 12% of steel. More than 40% of metallurgy complex production is exported.

Metallurgical complex includes 72 large and medium-scale enterprises, including 34 en-terprises of ferrous metallurgy and 38 — of non-ferrous one. At present, in ferrous metallurgy one can observe transition to manufacturing of final product in comparison to production of lower conversions (growth of pipe production, aluminum and copper rolled stock etc.).

Perspectives of development of Sverdlovsk region ferrous metallurgy are explained by stable demand for metal rolled stock at the internal market and high demand at the external one.

Such plants as Nizhni Tagil metallurgical works (EvrazHolding), Sinarski and Seversky pipe manufacturing plants (Pipe metallurgical company), Uralelectromed (Ural mining and metallurgical company), Bogoslovski and Ural aluminum plants (Siberian-Ural aluminum company), and also Serovski ferroalloys plant («KERMAS Limited»), VIZ-Stal', Pervouralsk Novotrubni plant are well-known both in Russia and abroad.

Verkhnesaldinsk metallurgy industrial corporation (VSMPO) is one of the world leaders in titanium production, the main supplier of titanium products for the American company Boeing and European Airbus.
 

Mechanical engineering

Mechanical engineering of the Middle Ural is a base for development of powerful Ural regional production complex: today it provides more than 20% of the total industrial output of large and medium enterprises. Mechanical engineering is oriented at the output of chemical, oil-field, metallurgical and electro-technical equipment.

Mechanical engineering complex includes enterprises of seven sub-branches, and the largest specific weight in the production volume of the branch belongs to four sub-branches: heavy, power and mining mechanical engineering — 33,6%, electro-technicalindustry and instrument-making — 22,8%, transport mechanical engineering —18,9%, oil-gas and chemical machine building — 10,7%.
One enterprise of Sverdlovsk region, Uralvagonzavod in Nizhni Tagil, produces almost 90% of Russian railway trucks.
Moreover, almost 30% of Russian steam and gas turbines, 21% of large electric machines, 16% of power transformers are produced in Sverdlovsk region.
 

Construction complex

Construction complex and housing municipal economy. In region operates more than 360 large and average building and repair-building organisations of various patterns of ownership (including with participation ' of the foreign capital) and 3,6 thousand small enterprises and the organizations. The largest building organisations ot Sverdlovsk area — Joint-Stock Company " Atomstroykompleks ", Joint-Stock Company «the SOU ¹18», joint-stock company «North Ural management of building», Open Society" Sverdlovskmetrostroy", etc.

Consumer properties of habitation have considerably improved. Building is carried out at the expense of means of the enterprises and the organisations of all patterns of ownership, budgetary investments, and also with attraction of means of the population. Last years the gain îf building of individual apartment houses is marked. By individual builders in 2006 it is constructed 400,8 thousand ì2 habitation, that on 22,6 % above level 2005.

Housing and communal services of Sverdlovsk region comprise more than 90 million sq m of living area. Until 2010 it is stipulated to build 10 million sq m more of housing. In 2006 it is placed in operation 1280,1 thousand ì2 apartment houses, that on 15,8 % more than in 2005.

Within the limits of the national project «the Accessible and comfortable habitation— to citizens of Russia» in 2007 under housing construction in Sverdlovsk area is planned to allocate 1 thousand ground areas for 800-900 thousand erection ì2 habitation. In 2007 the building total amount is planned at the rate about 1,5 million sq m hypothecary crediting of the population is actively carried out. In 2006 it is given out hypothecary credits for the sum of 4,067 billion rbl., that in 5,9 times more than in 2005.
 

Chemical industry complex

Chemical industry complex of Sverdlovsk region is represented by enterprises of chemical petrochemical, medical and microbiological branches, where more than 22 thousand employees work. At present time, 183 enterprises function in chemical and petrochemical industry of the region. Their share in total industrial production amounts to 2,5%.
 

Plants of defense complex

Plants of defense complex constitute the most perspective branches of domestic industry — aircraft and rocket production, nuclear-power engineering, metallurgy and special chemistry, radio-technical industry and instrument making.

Conduction in the Ural of specialized international exhibition of arms and military equipment Russian Expo Arms facilitates to extend the number of trade partners for defense industry enterprises.
 

Timber industry

Timber industry. Production potential of the Sverdlovsk region timber industry is among ten biggest regions of Russia. At present, timber industry comprises 95 big and medium-sized plants. The region has well-developed sawmills, veneer mills and tile production, pulp-and-paper, hydrolytic and resin industry works. Ural region produces one fifth of total Russian output of veneer, 15% of wooden chipboards and 10% of paper. Export-oriented goods are manufac-tured by about 10 enterprises. 70% of produced veneer and more than one third of lumber are exported.


Light, food and perfumery industry

Regional lightindustry structure is characterized by prevailing of clothing, knitting sub-branches; textile, yarn and carpets are also produced. Light industry is one of the oldest branches of industrial production of Sverdlovsk region. The leader of perfumery industry in Russia is the Ural enterprise «Concern «Kalina». The leading enterprises of food industry of the region are Irbit dairy factory, Ekaterinburg dairy factory ¹ 1, Fat stock industrial complex (Rusagro), Confectionery union «SladCO» (United Confectioneries). Ekaterinburg meatpacking plant (EMK) is among ten leading Russian producers of meat and sausages.
 

Electric power engineering

Electric power engineering is accounting for 10,5% in industry structure of Sverdlovsk region. The region ranks one of the first places in Russia by production and consumption of power.

18 electric power stations with total capacity of more than 9000 MW operate in the re-gion. The main manufacturer of electric and heat power is JSC «Sverdlovenergo», combining 12 heat power stations. The largest of power stations are Reftinskaya hydroelectric power plant, Verkhnetagilskaya hydroelectric power plant, Sredneuralsk hydroelectric power plant. Electric power stations are united into Sverdlovsk regional power system; its centralized electrical net-work completely covers the region territory. Up to 2015 it is planned to invest about 83 billion rubles into power engineering of Sverdlovsk region, out of which 32 billion rubles will be spent for reconstruction of electric networks, 31 billion rubles — for construction of the fourth power-generating unit of Beloyarskaya nuclear power plant 20 billion rubles — for construction of a new heat and power plant near Serovin the north of the region.

Sverdlovsk region covers 97% of fuel resources due to other regions. Coal for stations of JSC «Sverdlovenergo» is coming from Ekibastuz (Kazakhstan), black and brown coal for public power system is transported mainly from Eastern Siberia (Kuznetsk, Khakassiya and others), natural gas (region is the second largest natural gas consumer in Russia after Moscow) comes from Tyumen region.
Sverdlovsk region consumes 30 million tons of equivalent fuel per year. Gas amounts to 53% of the fuel and power balance structure, solid fuel — 42%, liquid fuel — 5%.

Beloyarskaya nuclear power plant named after I.V.Kurchatov (BAES) is situated in Sverdlovsk region, its development is considered to be one of perspective sources of widening power resources for the region.
 

Transport and communication

The main strategic direction of international transit traffic development is the extension of the corridor from European countries via Trans-Siberian railway to Far East and countries of South-East Asia, China, Japan. The shortest railway routes to the countries of Central Asia go exactly through Ekaterinburg, which ensures the increase of international transit cargo traffic.

Airport Koltsovo is the biggest international airport in Ural region, and airport Uktus links Ekaterinburg by local airlines with regional towns and towns of neighboring regions.

The bulk of international traffic falls at the air company «Ural airlines». Company «Luf-thansa» is an operator of the international airline Frankfurt-Ekaterinburg-Perm-Kazan. In 2004 British Airways opened London-Ekaterinburg flight. In the context of expanding its activity, in March 2004 Czech Airlines organized servicing of additional flight Ekaterinburg-Prague.

Sverdlovsk railway is serving Sverdlovsk, Perm, Tyumen regions, Yamalo-Nenetsky and Khanty-Mansiysk autonomous districts. Today Sverdlovsk railway, route miles of which within the boundaries of Sverdlovsk region amount to 3 347 km, is one of three largest Russian railways concerning freight turnover and passenger traffic.

High growth rates of industrial production and customer demand contribute to the devel-opment of transport-logistic infrastructure in the region.

Highway system amounts to 11 250 km. The main thruways of the region are motorways Ekaterinburg-Perm (Western direction), Ekaterinburg-Chelyabinsk (Southern direction), Ekater-inburg-Tyumen (Eastern direction) and Ekaterinburg-Serov (Northern direction). Annually about 300 km of highways is being constructed and about 500 km is being upgraded in Sverdlovsk region.

The market of transport lease in Ekaterinburg only arises. Leading positions here takes taxi. At the same time, companies specializing in private transportations started to develop a trend related to servicing juridical persons. In the beginning of 2003 the largest European net-work Eurocar opened its representation office in Ekaterinburg; since 2002 representation Hertz has been working in this market.
 

Communication

Sverdlovsk region has one of the most updated systems of telecommunication in Russia. Ekaterinburg has Russia biggest long-distance exchange and facilities for international telephone and telegraph communication with digital linear routs of fiber-optic lines that come from Trans-Siberian line Moscow-Khabarovsk.

There are five cellular operators in the region:

(«Motive»)», «Bee Line» («VympelCom»),
«Uralsvyazinform».
 

Tourism

There are more than 250 traveling agencies sharing tourism market of Sverdlovsk region. Every year this number is increasing due to Moscow operators who have forced their way to Sverdlovsk region.

Ural Tourist Association, which affiliates 30 tourist operators, has been functioning in Yekaterinburg since 1996. They offer wide specter of domestic and foreign tourist directions. Annually more than 50 thousand tourists from Sverdlovsk region spent their vacations abroad.

The number of foreigners visiting the region is also increasing.

Domestic and foreign tourism are the most promising trend of Sverdlovsk region traveling agencies activity. Favorable geographical location of Sverdlovsk region at the boarder-line between Europe and Asia contributes to the development of tourist industry. On the territory of the city one can find all architectural styles pertaining to XVIII-XIX centuries. Foreign specialists particularly take interest in architectural models of constructivism.
Temple-on Blood, Ganina Yama – the place of the last Russian Emperor assassination and burial are important historical points of interest in Sverdlovsk region. Temple complex in Verhotourie is one of the most popular directions of tourist trips.

According to Russian Ministry of Culture information center Sverdlovsk region museums hold the third place in Russian Federation after Moscow and Saint Petersburg in respect of quantity, funds, number of exhibitions and visitors. The most important museums are located in Yekaterinburg.

Tourist companies are widening their range of services on the territory of Sverdlovsk region. New tourist trip “Yeltsin`s Places” comprises visiting the house of the first Russian President, walking along corridors of former Communist Party regional committee and Ural State Technical University which the first Russian president had graduated.
